Enhanced durability
Mineral crystals use a similar material to windowpane glass and were developed for watches as a harder alternative to acrylic. Mineral crystals are still susceptible to scratches but less so than acrylic, however it is not possible to buff out these scratches as it is with acrylic. Mineral glass is not as shatter resistant as acrylic but does offer greater transparency and clarity. Due to their improved scratch resistance versus acrylic, and improved shatter resistance versus sapphire, mineral is often considered to be the best of both worlds as a crystal material.

"A beautiful watch that I purchased for a mod experiment. Very reasonably priced, and with a clean dial, a nice color combination and a cheap strap. I understood that TIMEX watches usually use brass for the case with PVD coating. So I sanded most of it out and hope to a patina develop. Hopefully the rest of the watch continues to function as advertised, and so far it has. Pity TIMEX doesn’t offer this without the PVD coating. Or that noone from TIMEX won’t read this."
